How pharmacy licensing works in Texas.
Texas uses its own edition of the MPJE, and every applicant goes through fingerprinting and a background check. It is also one of the states where full technician registration depends on national certification.
NAPLEX plus the Texas MPJE
The Board requires the NAPLEX and the Texas MPJE, plus 1,740 internship hours, which graduates certify through their school. Fingerprinting is part of every application.
Reciprocity plus the Texas MPJE
Pharmacists first licensed by exam in another state apply through NABP's license transfer program and pass the Texas MPJE. You cannot test until the Board approves your application.
Trainee, then registered
Registered technicians must hold current PTCB or ExCPT certification. Without it, you register as a technician trainee, and that registration lasts two years and cannot be renewed.
Drug therapy management
Under a physician's written protocol, Texas pharmacists can order drug therapy related lab tests and start or change drug therapy after diagnosis, with six hours of related CE each year.
