Louisiana Licensing

How pharmacy licensing works in Louisiana.

Louisiana sets a higher bar than most states for pharmacy technicians, who need national certification and supervised practical experience before they are certified. Pharmacists need the Louisiana MPJE, whether they are new graduates or transferring a license.

Pharmacists

NAPLEX plus the MPJE-La

The Louisiana Board of Pharmacy requires the NAPLEX and the Louisiana MPJE, plus 1,740 hours of practical experience, which graduates of ACPE-accredited programs are credited with through their degree.

Moving to Louisiana

MPJE-La, then NABP transfer

Pharmacists licensed elsewhere pass the Louisiana MPJE, then complete the NABP license transfer application. Transfer applicants do not retake the NAPLEX.

Technicians

Candidate, then certified

New technicians register as pharmacy technician candidates while they train. To earn a Louisiana pharmacy technician certificate they pass the PTCB or ExCPT exam and, on some routes, complete 600 hours of practical experience.

Exam Timing

Scores expire after one year

Louisiana exam scores expire one year after the exam date under state law, so plan your Louisiana application soon after you pass the NAPLEX or MPJE-La.

For Louisiana Employers

Hire Louisiana pharmacy staff faster than you can on your own.

Louisiana's technician rules mean a new hire cannot simply start as a certified technician, and experienced pharmacists in smaller metros are in short supply. We check license and certificate status on the first call and send you a short list of people who are ready to talk.

  • Louisiana license and technician credentials checked before you see a resume.
  • A short list of strong candidates, not a pile of applications to sift.
  • Honest pay advice: if we think your offer is above or below the Louisiana market, we will tell you, and show you how to stand out.
  • Permanent, contract and leadership hiring across the whole market.
