Pennsylvania Licensing

How pharmacy licensing works in Pennsylvania.

Pennsylvania now registers pharmacy technicians for the first time, and pharmacists need some state-specific training on top of their exams. Both affect hiring timelines.

Pharmacists

NAPLEX plus the PA MPJE

The Pennsylvania State Board of Pharmacy requires the NAPLEX, the Pennsylvania MPJE and 1,500 internship hours, plus child abuse recognition and opioid education training.

Moving to Pennsylvania

Reciprocity through NABP

Pharmacists licensed elsewhere apply through NABP, pass the Pennsylvania MPJE and complete the same background checks and training as new graduates.

Technicians

Registration now required

Since June 28, 2026, pharmacy technicians must be registered with the Board to practice. Registration needs a Board-approved training program and child abuse recognition training.

Broader Scope

Collaborative agreements

Pennsylvania pharmacists can manage drug therapy under written collaborative agreements with physicians, and can immunize under Board rules.
