How pharmacy licensing works in New York.
Pharmacists in New York are licensed through the State Education Department's Office of the Professions. The rules for technicians in particular are different from most of the country.
NAPLEX plus the MPJE
New York requires the NAPLEX and the MPJE. Its separate practical exam was dropped in 2022. PharmD graduates of ACPE-accredited programs have the internship covered by their degree.
License by endorsement
Pharmacists licensed in another state apply by endorsement, transfer their license through NABP and then pass the New York MPJE.
Registered Pharmacy Technicians
New York's Registered Pharmacy Technician license requires PTCB or NHA certification and applies in hospitals and health-system pharmacies, with no more than two per supervising pharmacist.
Certified to vaccinate
With a state immunization certificate, New York pharmacists can give flu vaccines to patients aged 2 and over and other approved vaccines to adults.
