Licensing for Chicago pharmacy jobs.
Pharmacists and technicians in Chicago are licensed by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR). Illinois has recently changed its law exam, and the metro area crosses into Indiana, so the details matter.
NAPLEX plus Illinois law
Pharmacists need the NAPLEX and Illinois' pharmacy law requirement. A 2026 law (Public Act 104-0461) replaces the MPJE with an ACPE-approved Illinois pharmacy law program and assessment.
Licensure by endorsement
Pharmacists licensed by exam in another state can apply to IDFPR by endorsement, but still need to meet the Illinois law requirement before they start.
Register, then certify
Illinois pharmacy technicians register with IDFPR and must become a Registered Certified Pharmacy Technician, by passing an accredited certification exam, within two years.
Northwest Indiana
The Chicago metro area includes Northwest Indiana. Roles on the Indiana side need an Indiana license, which we check before anyone interviews.
Sources: Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation and the Illinois Pharmacy Practice Act. Requirements change, so always confirm with the board before you apply.
