How pharmacy licensing works in Iowa.
Iowa is one of the more straightforward states to move into, and its pharmacists have a wide scope under statewide protocols. Both make it a good market for relocating candidates.
NAPLEX plus the UMPJE
The Iowa Board of Pharmacy requires the NAPLEX and a board-approved law exam, which is the Uniform MPJE (UMPJE) from April 2026. Graduates of ACPE-accredited US programs meet the 1,500-hour internship requirement through their degree.
NABP license transfer
Pharmacists with a current, unencumbered license in another state can transfer through NABP and pass the board-approved law exam.
Trainee, then certified
Technician trainees register for up to one year and are expected to become nationally certified (PTCB or NHA) in that time. Certified technicians must keep that certification active.
Statewide protocols
Iowa pharmacists can order and give naloxone, nicotine replacement and adult vaccines, and test and treat flu, strep A and COVID-19 for patients aged 6 and over, under statewide protocols.
