Illinois Licensing

How pharmacy licensing works in Illinois.

Illinois changed its law requirement in June 2026: new and relocating pharmacists can now complete ILPRO, an ACPE-approved program on Illinois pharmacy law, instead of the MPJE. The MPJE is still accepted.

Pharmacists

NAPLEX plus ILPRO or the MPJE

New pharmacists pass the NAPLEX and complete ILPRO, the Illinois Pharmacist Readiness and Orientation Program, or the MPJE. Renewals now include two hours of pharmacy law education.

Moving to Illinois

Endorsement with ILPRO

Pharmacists licensed in another state for more than a year apply by endorsement and can complete ILPRO rather than sit the MPJE.

Technicians

Registered, then designated

Technicians register with IDFPR from age 16 and must add a Certified designation, by passing the PTCB or NHA exam, or a Student designation by their second renewal.

Broader Scope

Contraception access

Under a state standing order updated in June 2026, trained Illinois pharmacists can dispense hormonal, non-hormonal and emergency contraception after a patient self-screening.
