Indiana Licensing

How pharmacy licensing works in Indiana.

Indiana is one of a handful of states that does not require a pharmacy law exam, so licensing here is quicker than in most of its neighbors. Pharmacy technicians hold their own Indiana license, with a training permit route for people new to the job.

Pharmacists

NAPLEX, no law exam

Indiana requires the NAPLEX and no state law exam. Graduates of ACPE-accredited programs meet the internship requirement through their degree, with no extra hours needed.

Moving to Indiana

NABP license transfer

Pharmacists licensed in another state apply through NABP's electronic license transfer. Indiana does not require the MPJE or UMPJE for a transfer, though the board can ask for more to confirm equivalency.

Technicians

Licensed, with a training permit

Indiana technicians need a license, which takes a PTCB or ExCPT pass or a board-approved training program. New technicians can work under a one-year technician-in-training permit while they complete that program.

Broader Scope

Hormonal contraception

Under a statewide standing order effective January 1, 2026, trained Indiana pharmacists can prescribe and dispense hormonal contraceptive patches and self-administered hormonal contraception to patients aged 18 and over.
