How pharmacy licensing works in Kentucky.
Kentucky still uses the state MPJE, and it caps lifetime attempts on the licensing exams. Pharmacists can also start therapy for a long list of conditions under board-authorized protocols.
NAPLEX plus the MPJE
The Kentucky Board of Pharmacy requires the NAPLEX and the MPJE. Candidates have three attempts at each exam, with up to two more after extra study, for a lifetime limit of five.
MPJE, then NABP transfer
Pharmacists licensed in another state pass the Kentucky MPJE first, then complete the NABP license transfer application, plus a fingerprint background check.
Registered every year
All Kentucky pharmacy technicians must register with the board and renew each year by March 31. Technicians with current PTCB or NHA certification can take on some tasks under general rather than immediate supervision.
Board-authorized protocols
Under protocols signed with a physician or APRN, Kentucky pharmacists can start therapy for conditions including flu, strep, uncomplicated UTIs and COVID-19, and provide HIV PrEP and hormonal contraception.
