Tennessee Licensing

How pharmacy licensing works in Tennessee.

Tennessee uses its own edition of the MPJE and asks new pharmacists for 1,700 internship hours. Technicians register with the Board, and national certification lets them take on extra tasks and changes how pharmacies can staff.

Pharmacists

NAPLEX plus the TN MPJE

The Board requires the NAPLEX and the Tennessee MPJE, plus 1,700 hours of internship completed through programs structured by a college or school of pharmacy.

Moving to Tennessee

Reciprocity through NABP

Pharmacists licensed elsewhere apply through NABP's license transfer program, pass the Tennessee MPJE and complete a criminal background check. If you have been licensed for 12 months or more, reciprocity is the route.

Technicians

Registered with the Board

Anyone working as a technician must register with the Board, with a background check and an employer affidavit. New hires can work for up to 90 days from their hire date before registering.

Broader Scope

Contraceptive prescribing

Tennessee pharmacists can prescribe hormonal contraceptives under a collaborative pharmacy practice agreement that includes a general prescriptive order from one or more authorized prescribers.

  • Tennessee license and technician credentials checked before you see a resume.
  • A short list of strong candidates, not a pile of applications to sift.
