North Carolina Licensing

How pharmacy licensing works in North Carolina.

North Carolina moved to the Uniform MPJE in April 2026. It also offers an advanced practice route through the Clinical Pharmacist Practitioner credential, which was expanded in October 2025.

Pharmacists

NAPLEX plus the UMPJE

The board requires an ACPE-accredited degree, 1,500 hours of supervised practical experience, and passing scores on the NAPLEX and the law exam, which is the Uniform MPJE (UMPJE) from April 2026.

Moving to North Carolina

Reciprocity through NABP

Pharmacists originally licensed by exam in another state transfer through NABP and pass the law exam. A license gained by reciprocity elsewhere cannot be used as the basis for a North Carolina transfer.

Technicians

Registered with the board

All technicians register with the board. Technicians without PTCB or ExCPT certification need a high school diploma or equivalent and must finish training within 180 days of starting work.

Advanced Practice

Clinical Pharmacist Practitioners

CPPs are approved by both the pharmacy and medical boards and work under collaborative agreements with physicians, starting, changing or stopping drug therapy and ordering tests.
