How pharmacy licensing works in South Carolina.
South Carolina still uses its own state edition of the MPJE and has not moved to the Uniform MPJE. Every technician must be registered with the Board, and a separate State Certified status recognizes national certification and experience.
NAPLEX plus the SC MPJE
The Board requires the NAPLEX and the South Carolina MPJE, plus 1,500 hours of supervised practical experience. From July 2026, candidates get up to three attempts at each exam.
NABP license transfer
Pharmacists with a current license in another state apply through NABP's electronic license transfer, then complete the Board's reciprocity form and checklist.
Registered, then State Certified
Every technician needs an active Board registration to work, and national certification is not required for it. State Certified status adds PTCB or NHA certification, an approved training program and 1,000 supervised hours.
Contraception under joint protocol
Under a 2022 state law, pharmacists can dispense self-administered hormonal contraceptives and give injectable ones under a written joint protocol, after a patient self-screening.
