How pharmacy licensing works in Virginia.
Virginia moved to the Uniform MPJE in autumn 2026, which changes the law exam for new and transferring pharmacists. Its pharmacists can also start treatment for a wide list of conditions under statewide protocols.
NAPLEX plus the UMPJE
The Virginia Board of Pharmacy requires the NAPLEX, a pharmacy law exam and at least 1,500 hours of practical experience. The law exam is the Uniform MPJE (UMPJE) for licenses issued from October 1, 2026.
NABP license transfer
Pharmacists licensed in another state can transfer through NABP and must pass the UMPJE. Anyone who passed the Virginia MPJE by September 30, 2026 has three years to complete licensure with it.
Registered, trained and certified
Technicians register with the board after completing an approved training program and passing a PTCB or NHA certification exam. People still in training need a separate technician trainee registration.
Statewide protocols
Virginia pharmacists can start hormonal contraception, naloxone, nicotine replacement and HIV prevention, and treat strep A, flu, COVID-19 and urinary tract infections guided by a waived test, under statewide protocols.
