How pharmacy licensing works in Maryland.
Maryland is moving to the Uniform MPJE, with the UMPJE available from June 2026 and the MPJE retiring in May 2027. Pharmacists moving in also need recent practice hours, and pharmacists who vaccinate need a separate Board registration.
NAPLEX plus the state law exam
New pharmacists pass the NAPLEX and the Maryland law exam with a score of 75 or more. Graduates of ACPE-accredited programs complete 1,000 hours of school-supervised practice experience.
NABP license transfer
Licensed pharmacists apply through NABP license transfer, pass the law exam (Maryland accepts the MPJE or UMPJE for transfers) and show at least 520 hours of practice since graduating.
Registered with the Board
Every technician working in a Maryland pharmacy must be registered, even if nationally certified. Applicants complete a Board-approved training program and pass a national certification or Board-approved exam.
Separate vaccination registration
Maryland pharmacists who give vaccines register with the Board for vaccination, with an approved certification course and a live, in-person CPR card.
