West Virginia Licensing

How pharmacy licensing works in West Virginia.

West Virginia replaced its own MPJE with the Uniform MPJE in August 2026, plus a short West Virginia law module. Technicians need both approved training and national certification to register.

Pharmacists

NAPLEX plus the UMPJE

West Virginia requires board-approved exams and at least 1,500 internship hours. After passing the UMPJE, new licensees get 90 days to pass an online open-book quiz on West Virginia law, the WV-Plus Module.

Moving to West Virginia

NABP license transfer

Pharmacists licensed in another state apply through NABP's Electronic Licensure Transfer Program and pass the UMPJE, then complete the WV-Plus Module.

Technicians

Trainee, then registered

Technicians register after finishing an approved training program and earning PTCB or NHA certification. Trainees register first, training through a school program or a 500-hour on-the-job program.

Broader Scope

Contraception without a separate prescription

Under a statewide standing order, trained West Virginia pharmacists can dispense self-administered hormonal contraceptives to patients aged 18 and over after a risk screening.
