How pharmacy licensing works in Massachusetts.
Massachusetts licenses every pharmacy technician, including nationally certified ones, and has three technician tiers. Pharmacists moving in need the MPJE and documented internship hours, so it pays to plan the move early.
NAPLEX plus the MPJE
New pharmacists pass the NAPLEX and the Massachusetts MPJE, each with a score of at least 75. They also need at least 1,500 internship hours approved by the Board.
NABP reciprocity and the MPJE
Pharmacists licensed by exam in another state apply through NABP, document their internship experience and pass the MPJE. The Board makes the final decision on eligibility.
Trainee, technician, certified
Trainees can work for up to 1,500 hours or one year. Licensed technicians must be 18 or over, and certified pharmacy technicians can take on extra duties such as requesting refill authorizations.
Emergency contraception standing order
Since August 2022, Massachusetts pharmacists can dispense emergency contraception pills under a statewide standing order.
