How pharmacy licensing works in Rhode Island.
Rhode Island moved to the Uniform MPJE on April 1, 2026, and it licenses technicians at two levels. A 90-day temporary license can bridge the gap while transferring pharmacists finish the process.
NAPLEX plus the UMPJE
The board requires 1,500 internship hours and passing scores on the NAPLEX and the law exam, which has been the Uniform MPJE (UMPJE) since April 1, 2026.
UMPJE, then NABP transfer
Pharmacists licensed by exam in another state pass the UMPJE and transfer through NABP. A Rhode Island MPJE taken before April 1, 2026 is still accepted, and a 90-day temporary license is available.
Technician I and Technician II
Pharmacy Technician I needs a board-approved training program. Pharmacy Technician II needs a national certification exam (PTCE or ExCPT) and yearly continuing education. All technician licenses renew each June 30.
Adult vaccines and flu from age 9
Rhode Island pharmacists can immunize adults aged 18 and over, and give flu vaccine to patients aged 9 to 18, with training, CPR certification and a protocol or prescription.
