How pharmacy licensing works in California.
California runs one of the most demanding licensing systems in the country, and it also gives pharmacists one of the broadest scopes of practice. Both shape who you can hire and how quickly they can start.
NAPLEX plus the CPJE
New pharmacists need a NAPLEX pass and the California Practice Standards and Jurisprudence Examination (CPJE), plus 1,500 intern hours, before the California State Board of Pharmacy issues a license.
No simple license transfer
Pharmacists licensed in another state still sit the CPJE. The NAPLEX can be carried over through an NABP score transfer, but the board's own processing time needs to be built into any start date.
A board license, not just a certificate
Pharmacy technicians must hold a California license. The routes are an approved training program, PTCB certification or qualifying military training, alongside a high school diploma or GED.
Advanced Practice Pharmacists
Under SB 493, California pharmacists can furnish hormonal contraception, travel medications and smoking cessation therapy, and the separate Advanced Practice Pharmacist (APh) license allows pharmacists to start, adjust and stop drug therapy.

Where we recruit pharmacy staff in California.
California is less one job market than five. Pay, competition for candidates and the mix of employers change a lot between regions, and we brief every search with that in mind.
Los Angeles and Orange County
The largest pharmacy workforce in the state, with around 12,450 pharmacists in the Los Angeles metro area. Health systems, retail chains, specialty pharmacy and home infusion all compete for the same people. Los Angeles pharmacy jobs.
San Francisco, Oakland and San Jose
Academic medical centers, specialty and home infusion providers and life sciences employers. Many of our current California searches sit here.
San Diego and the border region
Hospital and ambulatory care pharmacy, plus a strong retail and long-term care market.
Inland Empire, Sacramento and the Central Valley
Fast-growing communities where hospital and retail roles in Fresno, Bakersfield, Riverside and Sacramento can take longer to fill, and where the right relocation pitch makes a real difference.
Santa Barbara to Monterey
Smaller hospitals and community pharmacies where one hire matters, and where relocating candidates need a clear picture of the area before they commit.
Home infusion and specialty sales
Field-based infusion sales, IVIG and pharmacy manager roles that cover large territories rather than a single site.

Hire California pharmacy staff faster than you can on your own.

- A short list of strong candidates, not a pile of applications to sift.
- Honest pay advice: if we think your offer is above or below the California market, we will tell you, and show you how to stand out.
- Permanent, contract and leadership hiring across every region of the state.
