How pharmacy licensing works in Hawaii.
Hawaii requires its own MPJE, even if you passed the exam for another state, plus 1,500 hours of verified pharmacy experience. Since January 2026, pharmacy technicians must also hold a state registration.
NAPLEX plus the Hawaii MPJE
New pharmacists pass the NAPLEX and the Hawaii MPJE with a score of 75 or more and verify at least 1,500 hours of practical experience in a pharmacy.
License transfer, with conditions
Pharmacists licensed in another state transfer through NABP, pass the Hawaii MPJE and meet the experience rule. California and Florida licenses do not reciprocate with Hawaii.
Registration required
Since January 1, 2026, technicians need a certificate of registration from the Board of Pharmacy, and pharmacies can only use registered technicians for technician duties.
Technician vaccinations
Registered technicians with PTCB or NHA certification, current CPR and approved injection training can give vaccines to patients aged three and over under direct pharmacist supervision.
