How pharmacy licensing works in Alaska.
Alaska keeps pharmacist licensing simple: since May 2024 new graduates need only the NAPLEX, and pharmacists moving in answer a short Alaska law questionnaire instead of sitting the MPJE. Technicians need their own Alaska license before they start work.
NAPLEX only
Since May 19, 2024, Alaska no longer requires the MPJE. New graduates of an accredited program pass the NAPLEX and attest that they completed the internship hours their degree required.
NABP transfer and a law questionnaire
Pharmacists with a current, unencumbered license apply through NABP license transfer and answer the 10-question Alaska Law Questionnaire. A temporary license is available while the application is processed.
Licensed before day one
Technicians need an Alaska technician license before they begin work. Applicants must be 18 (or 16 in an apprenticeship) and hold a high school diploma, GED or apprenticeship.
Vaccines without prior Board approval
Pharmacists who complete ACPE-accredited training and CPR/AED training can independently give immunizations and emergency medicines for severe allergic reactions, without prior Board approval.
