How pharmacy licensing works in Kansas.
Kansas is one of the first states to move to the Uniform MPJE, which makes it easier for pharmacists to carry a law exam result between participating states. Kansas pharmacists can also test and treat common infections under statewide protocols.
NAPLEX plus the UMPJE
The Kansas Board of Pharmacy requires the NAPLEX and a law exam. Kansas began using the Uniform MPJE (UMPJE) on April 1, 2026, and NABP lists March 31, 2027 as the Kansas MPJE retirement date.
License transfer and the UMPJE
Pharmacists licensed in another state for more than 90 days can apply by reciprocity, with fingerprints and a background check. NABP lists the UMPJE as required for license transfer into Kansas.
Registered, then certified
Kansas technicians register with the board, and anyone registered since July 1, 2017 must pass the PTCB or ExCPT exam before their first renewal. Registration renews every two years with 20 hours of continuing education.
Test and treat protocols
Kansas pharmacists can test for and start treatment for influenza and strep throat, and for uncomplicated urinary tract infections in women aged 18 to 64, under board-approved statewide protocols.
