How pharmacy licensing works in Washington.
Washington is switching its law exam from the MPJE to the Uniform MPJE during 2026. It also has one of the longest-standing frameworks for pharmacist prescribing through collaborative drug therapy agreements.
NAPLEX plus the UMPJE
The Pharmacy Quality Assurance Commission requires the NAPLEX and a law exam. The UMPJE has been available since July 2, 2026, and MPJE scores are only accepted for exams taken by December 29, 2026.
NABP license transfer
Pharmacists with an active license in another state apply through NABP's e-LTP and pass the Washington law exam. You do not need to keep the original license once Washington issues yours.
Licensed, trained and certified
Technicians must be 18, hold a high school diploma or GED, finish an approved training program and eight hours of Washington law study, and pass a national certification exam within a year of training.
Collaborative drug therapy agreements
Washington pharmacists can start or modify drug therapy under a collaborative drug therapy agreement with an authorized prescriber, filed with the commission and valid for two years.
