New Jersey Licensing

How pharmacy licensing works in New Jersey.

New Jersey licenses by reciprocity only from mutually reciprocating states and expects recent practice hours. Its technician ratio rules also shape how pharmacies staff, which makes certified technicians especially useful.

Pharmacists

NAPLEX plus the MPJE

New pharmacists pass the NAPLEX and the New Jersey MPJE after the board receives their transcript. Applicants more than two years past graduation must complete a 1,440-hour board-approved internship.

Moving to New Jersey

Reciprocity with recent practice

Pharmacists first licensed by examination in a reciprocating state transfer through NABP, pass the MPJE and show 1,500 hours of practice in the previous two years.

Technicians

Registered with the board

Technicians must register with the board. New hires can work as technician applicants for up to 180 days if they file their registration within their first 10 days of employment.

Staffing

The 1:2 ratio rule

A pharmacist may supervise two technicians at a time. Pharmacies can go above that only if every technician on duty holds a recognized certification, such as PTCB, and written protocols are in place.
