Montana Licensing

How pharmacy licensing works in Montana.

Montana pharmacists can prescribe independently in limited situations, and the state moved to the Uniform MPJE in June 2026. Technicians are licensed by the board and need national certification for a full license.

Pharmacists

NAPLEX plus the UMPJE

The Montana Board of Pharmacy requires a passing NAPLEX score and a jurisprudence exam. Montana replaced the MPJE with the Uniform MPJE (UMPJE) on June 1, 2026.

Moving to Montana

NABP license transfer

Pharmacists licensed in another state transfer through NABP. Montana accepts a previous passing MPJE or UMPJE score from any jurisdiction, and the transfer must be completed within a year of the NABP application.

Technicians

Licensed and nationally certified

Technicians certified by PTCB or NHA receive a full Montana license. Uncertified applicants receive a provisional license while they work toward certification, and must keep certification current once licensed.

Broader Scope

Independent pharmacist prescribing

Since December 2023, Montana pharmacists can prescribe independently in limited situations, provided they assess the patient, document a follow-up plan and notify the patient's primary care provider.
