North Dakota Licensing

How pharmacy licensing works in North Dakota.

North Dakota requires most pharmacies to be majority owned by licensed pharmacists, and its pharmacists can prescribe independently for a set list of conditions. Technicians need accredited training and national certification.

Pharmacists

NAPLEX plus the ND MPJE

The board requires an accredited pharmacy degree, at least 1,500 externship hours, and passing scores on the NAPLEX and the North Dakota MPJE.

Moving to North Dakota

NABP license transfer

Pharmacists licensed in another state apply through NABP's e-LTP, then sit the North Dakota MPJE once the board approves. Military spouses can ask the board about a provisional license.

Technicians

Accredited training and certification

Registered technicians complete an ASHP-accredited academic or on-the-job program and hold PTCB or NHA certification. Technicians in training can be registered for up to two years.

Ownership

Pharmacist-owned pharmacies

State law requires a pharmacy permit holder to be a pharmacist, or a business majority owned by pharmacists, with exceptions such as hospital pharmacies serving their own patients.
