Learn about the risks and pitfalls of attempting DIY audiology at home.

As with all areas of health and wellness, social media has really pushed the prevalence of wax removal and we are slowly learning the negative implications years of at home wax removal and cotton buds can have on our hearing. In an ever progressing world of technology it is becoming more and more common for manufacturers to create ‘at home’ devices and quick fixes for procedures that should be carried out by a qualified professional.

Wax removal is an important part of maintaining ear health but there are many dangers to at home methods or visiting a non-qualified practitioner. Here I have listed just some of the risks and complications that may occur, highlighting the importance of seeing a qualified audiologist or wax removal specialist…

Injury to the Ear Canal or Eardrum

Use of improper tools and techniques can lead to abrasions, cuts or even eardrum perforation, potentially resulting in discomfort, infection or even hearing loss.

Infection

When you go to the dentist you wouldn’t dream of your practitioner putting non-sterilised equipment in your mouth… So why would you put it in your ear!? If non-sterile equipment is used, or your ear canal is damaged during the procedure, this can lead to infection, ultimately resulting in further medical treatment.

Missed ear problems or missed diagnosis

If a practitioner has not had the correct training they may miss important signs of poor ear health. This can lead to delayed diagnosis or further damage. Underlying issues such as infections and tumours may go unnoticed or misdiagnosed as wax build up.

Risk of tinnitus

We’ve all heard of tinnitus, a condition that causes persistent ringing in the ear. If the eardrum or other sensitive structures within the ear are damaged it can lead to tinnitus, which can impact quality of life.

Over-removal of wax

Many people don’t know that ear wax actually serves a function! It serves as a protective layer stopping dust and microorganisms entering the system, as well as acting as a barrier against water and infection. If you are treating yourself at home or visiting a non-qualified individual you may remove too much wax, leaving yourself vulnerable to infection and other hearing issues.

Audiologists go through extensive training to ensure they help your hearing, not hinder it. Something as simple as wax removal can lead to permanent damage so it’s important you find the practitioner that’s right for you.

Do your research! In the UK all audiologists need to be registered with the HCPC () to legally practise. When you are looking for a clinic or practitioner ensure they are registered - anyone who has not undergone the correct professional training will not be registered to the HCPC!

At Quad we pride ourselves on working with the best in the industry. All of our audiology candidates and clients are HCPC registered reputable practitioners offering safe wax removal and hearing treatments. If you are ever tempted to go elsewhere ask yourself… is it really worth it?
